Last night, my wife and I had some free time without the kids. We were both craving Indian food so we chose a nearby Indian restaurant that we had been to many years ago. We grabbed a bottle of wine and got in the car.
On the drive there, we passed by a Vietnamese restaurant that caught our attention because we had never noticed it before, and it was also a bring-your-own-wine.
As we approached the Indian restaurant, only 1 parking spot was available. Before turning into the parking lot, I courteously allowed a car coming from the opposite direction, to pass before I turned in. However, the car did not simply pass by as I was expecting it to do, but instead turned towards the restaurant and took the last parking spot. Frustrated, I ended up parking on the street not too far away, not a big deal.

Walking towards the restaurant, with wine bottle in hand, my wife and I were looking for the typical "Apportez Votre Vin" sign that tells restaurant patrons that they can bring a bottle of wine to the restaurant but there was no sign. We entered and were offered, what seemed to be, a nice table by the window, the furthest table from the kitchen. Looking around, we didn't see any wine bottles on the other tables.
After 10 minutes of sitting there waiting, our waitress finally showed up and told us that the restaurant was no longer a bring-your-own-wine, she showed us the expensive wine list and dropped off the 2 menus. Disappointed, we put the bottle away.
That great table by the window was not that great. The sun was now shining through the window straight into my wife's eyes. I had to sit in a awkward position to create a shadow for her. My wife said, "we should just leave. We can go to that Vietnamese restaurant we saw on the way." I had my mind set on Indian cuisine so I said that we should stay.
It was another 10 minutes before she came back to fill our glasses with water and took our order. The service was slow but we were not in a hurry.
We were surprised to see that our appetizer, two samosas, did not come directly from the kitchen but instead from another nearby table. Apparently, they had given our appetizer to the wrong table. Once we got them, they were cold, doughy and not very tasty. Overall the whole meal lacked in flavour. Some of the vegetables looked like they came from a frozen bag. Nothing was really very good at all.
At the end of the meal, our waitress was nowhere to be seen, so I got up and went to the front cash register to pay. The cashier didn't give me my bill and simply told me the final price of the meal. Without questioning her, I handed over my credit card and paid. As we were on our way out, the cashier called me back. She had made a mistake with the billing and had charged us for another couple's meal instead. Once she corrected the mistake, our real bill was more expensive :)
Overall, we had an unpleasant dinning experience. We weren't angry or upset, just unsatisfied. As we left the restaurant, I couldn't help feel that, throughout the evening, the Universe was trying to tell me something but that I was not paying attention.
In hindsight, the Universe was saying: "I tried to prevent you from going to that awful restaurant but you didn't listen. I blocked the parking spot, I didn't let you open the bottle of wine, shined the sun directly into your wife's eyes, I even asked you to leave by speaking through your wife. I tried my best but you still insisted on staying. I even pointed out a nice Vietnamese restaurant."
Lesson learned. When the Universe is talking, I will listen and not force my way.
